Everything You Need to Know about Dermaplaning

So what is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a natural way to exfoliate that doesn’t use any chemicals! Dermaplaning involves a medical grade scalpel that will scrape off the dead skin cells, dirt, debris, hair, and upper layer of the skin. Because this is an all natural form of exfoliation, you will have no risk of allergic reaction, because it uses no chemicals. Dermaplaning is an excellent way to brighten a dull complexion!

Now let’s bust a big myth with dermaplaning… It will not make your hair grow back thicker or faster! The thin soft “peach fuzz” on your face is called vellus hair, thicker or more course hair from a mans beard or your eyebrows is called terminal hair. Dermaplaning will remove the top layer of dead skin cells and peach fuzz, and will not, and cannot turn vellus hair into terminal hair.

What can a dermaplane do for you?

Dermaplaing is not only good for giving your skin a smoother and brighter appearance, it can also help to reduce acne. Acne can be reduced by exfoliation of the skin and eliminating the oils and dirt clinging to the dead skin cells and the hair on the face. Hyperpigmentation is another concern that dermaplaning can address. This works because it will help even out skin tone by removing the top layer of skin, which will trigger the body to produce new skin cells.

Once the dead skin and hair are removed, your aesthetician will go over the face with the ultra sonic scrubber. This uses sound waves to bounce water in and out of your pores, causing any left over congestion in your pores to be flushed out! This put together with the dermaplane will lead to better product penetration. The skin will absorb product better because of the blood flow that stimulated, and the removal of the hair. This also makes for a flawless makeup application, and therefore is recommened before events such as weddings or dinner party!

Contraindications for dermaplaning include inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or if you are on prescription retinol. Another contraindication is cystic acne with active pustules, as the possibility of opening a pustule can spread that bacteria across the face.

Post care for a dermaplane will include no sun exposure, as well as wearing SPF, as this new skin can be easily damaged by UV light. Avoid the pool and chlorine, using facial oil, harsh skin care products, and touching the face. Following a dermaplane with a simple skin care routine is the best way to take care of that fresh skin!
