What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a therapy that has many medical and cosmetic uses. Platelets are a component of blood and play an essential role in helping to clot your blood at the site of an injury. Platelets also contain growth factors that can:

  • Aid healing
  • Support cell growth and regeneration
  • Form new capillaries (angiogenesis)
  • Stimulate collagen production

PRP therapy involves injecting concentrated preparations of platelets into the treatment area to boost your body’s innate healing abilities.

Where does PRP come from?

Your practitioner prepares PRP from a sample of your blood, so you’re using your own cells rather than a synthetic substitute. This means the treatment is very safe and there’s no risk of having an allergic reaction.

After taking some of your blood, your practitioner places it in a centrifuge specially designed for the purpose. The centrifugal force separates the platelets, which can then be drawn off ready for the injections.

What kinds of conditions is PRP used for?

PRP has a wide variety of applications, and the potential of PRP is the subject of considerable scientific research. Current uses of PRP include:

  • Rejuvenation of the neck and décolleté
  • Reducing scarring
  • Rejuvenating the backs of the hands
  • Improving the appearance of stretch marks
  • Injectable facelifts
  • Micro-needling treatments
  • Reducing hyperpigmentation
  • Healing wounds
  • Treating certain skin disorders
  • Improving sexual performance
  • Stimulating hair growth

PRP facials and face-lift procedures involve injecting the PRP solution into the face at strategic points, where it stimulates your body into repairing and regenerating damaged tissue.

Research into the effect of PRP on aging skin reported in the Journal of Drugs and Dermatology showed significant improvement in patients’ skin tone and elasticity, and a noticeable reduction of micropigmentation.

When will I see the results of PRP treatment?

It takes time for your body to carry out the healing and regeneration process, so you’ll see a gradual improvement over the weeks and months following your treatment. It usually takes several sessions to achieve the optimum results, which can last significantly longer than other treatments, even years for some patients.
