Spider Veins Q & A

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are tiny blood vessels that are visible under the skin. They may be red, purple, or blue, and they most often develop on the legs and face. Spider veins are essentially miniature varicose veins, and if you have varicose veins, you’re likely to have spider veins, too.

Why do I have spider veins?

Several factors increase the risk of developing spider veins, including:

  • Genetic tendency
  • Working in a job that requires you to stand most of the time
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Hormone activity during pregnancy, puberty, and menopause
  • Using hormonal forms of birth control
  • Taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • Previous history of thrombosis
  • Wearing tight clothing around the abdomen
  • Chronic constipation
  • Advancing age

Women are more susceptible to developing spider veins than men.

What treatments are available for spider veins?

Improving your general health is important for reducing and preventing spider veins, so eating a healthy diet, taking in plenty of exercise, and losing weight can all help. You should also avoid anything that puts pressure on your veins, such as standing for too long.

An effective way of treating spider veins is with sclerotherapy, a form of treatment that’s been in use for many years and is known to be safe. Sweet Spot MediSpa uses Asclera® to carry out sclerotherapy treatments.

How does sclerotherapy work?

Sclerotherapy involves injecting an agent, such as Asclera, into the spider veins. The Asclera increases the formation of scar tissue within the veins, forcing blood to travel through alternative, healthier veins. Once the pressure on the spider vein is gone, the discoloration disappears.

Your practitioner uses an IV needle to deliver the Asclera to the target veins. The sclerosing agent has to go in slowly, with your practitioner applying pressure to the vein. After treatment, you wear a compression stocking or bandage to prevent the development of blood clots.

It’s important to follow the aftercare instructions to optimize the healing process. You might see an immediate improvement when you remove any bandages, or you might require additional treatments. It can take up to three months to see the final results.

Spider veins aren’t usually harmful, but they can be unsightly, so for a safe and simple solution to the problem, schedule a sclerotherapy session at Sweet Spot MediSpa. Call today or book an appointment online.
